Food for Thought: My Journey to Building Muscle and the Power of Food Awareness

When I first started my fitness journey, I thought consistency and hard work were all I needed to see results. I was in the gym regularly, determined to build muscle and make serious gains. But despite my efforts, progress was slow, and it was incredibly frustrating. I couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t seeing the muscle growth I was working so hard for.

Years later, I learned a lesson that transformed my approach and helped me achieve in two weeks what I hadn’t been able to accomplish in two months: the importance of calories and food awareness. This was a turning point not only for my own progress but for how I approach fitness and nutrition with my clients today, both online and in-person.

A Surprising Discovery in Food Choices

I shared this story at a recent networking event, illustrating my point with a simple visual comparison. I held up a mango and 8 Samoan Girl Scout Cookies, asking which one had more calories. Most people guessed the Girl Scout Cookies—and they were right. But the difference was staggering: while the mango contained about 200 calories, the cookies packed in a whopping 750 calories. They were similar in size, yet the calorie count was worlds apart.

This revelation blew my mind, and it quickly became clear why I hadn’t seen progress before. I was missing the key ingredient in any effective fitness journey: awareness of what I was putting into my body.

Why Food Awareness is a Game-Changer

Learning about calories and the nutritional impact of different foods completely changed the game for me. I’m not saying you need to track every calorie to lose weight or build muscle. I get that calorie counting isn’t for everyone. But having a basic awareness of the calorie density in foods, like that between a mango and cookies, gives you a major advantage. It’s the difference between unknowingly sabotaging your progress and making mindful choices that support your goals.

This awareness is especially crucial if you want to build muscle, lose weight, or simply maintain a balanced lifestyle. Knowing what’s in your food can help you make choices that align with your goals, giving you more control over your results in the gym and in life.
